Besides the popular campground, Doheny State Beach is also famous for its surf spots and picnic area. It also has tide pools and an aquarium. Enough for the spoiler, here are 7 helpful guides we think first-timers will need!

Doheny State Beach is named as “Orange County’s Best Camping Site”. This title is given because of its warm waters and sandy fire pits. It has more than 100 campgrounds which 33 of them are located on the beachfront. The rate of Doheny State Beach campground is USD60 per night for the beachfront and USD40 per night for regular ones.

You won’t find electrical, water, or sewage hook-ups since this beach is a ‘dry campground’. Portable water and dump stations are provided here for RV’s staying at the campground. But don't worry, the beach provides picnic tables and hot showers. These facilities will totally make you feel at home!

2.    Doheny State Beach Parking

Doheny State Beach has three parking lots with a spacious and convenient parking service. The parking fee is USD15 per day. Prepare your money to pay in one of the stations.

You can pay by cash or cards, as long as it's not American Express. For pedestrians and cyclists, they can enter this place for free. This beach is open from 6 AM to 10 PM.

3.    Surfing, Kayaking, and Paddleboarding

Surfers are still coming to Doheny State Beach although the construction of Dana Point Harbor in the 1960s changed the wave configurations. So, for you experienced surfers, this beach is still the best option to have fun!

You are allowed to do board surfing anywhere along the beach. If you want to do kayaking or paddleboarding, you can rent the equipment at the rental centers near the beach. There are also jet skis, surfboards, wetsuits, and other watersport equipment.

4.    Location

The entrance of Doheny State Beach is located off of Highway 1 or commonly known as Pacific Coast Highway. If you are on Pacific Coast Highway, go to Dana Point Harbor Drive and you will find the beach on the left side.

If you are from the Los Angeles area, take San Diego Freeway (Interstate 5) in the south through Mission Viejo. San Diego Freeway changes its name several times. So, just go ahead until you arrive in Pacific Coast Highway (PCH/Highway 1).

5.    Picnicking at Doheny State Beach

There is a 5-acre landscaped picnic area completed with tables and BBQ grills. It has several picnic sites covered with a canopy and the 13 others can be reserved for a fee. Four of the picnic areas are shady and the rest are nice and sunny.

You better come early because if you have reserved a picnic site, it doesn’t guarantee you can enter if the parking area is full. It is important to reserve the group picnic area in advance so you will get empty tables.

Go to Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association for further information.
