1. How long does it take to charge Switch controllers?

Before going straight to know how to charge Switch controllers, first, you’ll want to know how long it takes to charge Switch controllers. Based on Nintendo’s official page, it takes approximately 3 ½ hours to fully charge the Joy-Con controllers. To see how much charge they have, simply hit the Joy-Con icon on Switch’s main menu and you’ll see their current charge level.

2. How to charge Nintendo Switch controllers

There are some ways to charge your Nintendo controllers. First, we’re going to show you how to charge Switch controllers while attached to the Nintendo Switch console. Simply follow the guide below to know how:

Step 1. With the Switch on, attach the Joy-Con controllers to either side of the console until they click. You should see a notification on the screen showing that they’re connected.

Step 2. Plug the AC adapter into a power outlet, then connect the adapter’s plug to the USB-C port on the bottom of the Switch.

Step 3. Put your Nintendo Switch into sleep mode by hitting the power button located on the top. The Joy-Con controllers will not charge if the Switch is powered off completely.

Step 4. Your controllers are charging.

Another way to charge your controllers is by attaching them to the Joy-Con Charging Grip. It’s important to note that the Joy-Con Charging Grip is not included in any Nintendo Switch bundle. You have to buy the product separately.

The following is how to charge Switch controllers using the Joy-Con Charging Grip.

Step 1. Attach the Joy-Con to the Joy-Con Charging Grip.

Step 2. Connect the Joy-Con Charging Grip to the Nintendo Switch dock using the USB cable that was included with the Charging Grip. Or connect it directly to the Nintendo Switch AC adapter.

Step 3. Your controllers are charging.

3. How to charge Switch controllers (Switch Lite version)

There’s another version of Nintendo Switch, that is, Nintendo Switch Lite. This version is dedicated to handheld gaming, meaning that the controllers are built in the device, so you can’t remove them. That’s why Nintendo Switch Lite can only play the games in the Nintendo Switch library that support handheld mode.

For games that do not support handheld mode, players can wirelessly connect compatible controllers to Nintendo Switch Lite (note that you have to separately buy Joy-Con controllers for Nintendo Switch Lite). If using separate Joy-Con controllers, you’ll also need to have a device to recharge them, such as the Joy-Con Charging Grip.

4. How to charge Switch controllers with your Switch dock

If you bought a Switch Pro Controller, you can charge it at any time through the included USB-C cable connected to your Switch dock. The front two USB ports on the dock are easiest to access while still playing.
