Basically, you can buy molds for your project in the market. But if you lack the molds, you learn how to make silicon molds by yourself. Making objects from resin requires creativity and a skilled hand.

Follow these steps to make silicon molds properly.

Materials:

  • 100% Silicone Caulk
  • Caulk Gun
  • Silicone Mat or Acetate Sheet
  • Baking Pan/Cardboard box
  • Disposable Gloves
  • Paper Towels
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Step 1. Start by laying out a baking pan, then cover the pan with your silicon mat. The backing pan will make mold easy to move around when it's filled with resin.

Step 2. Lay down one layer of silicone. Squeeze the handle gently until you see caulk start to squeeze out of the tube. 

Step 3. Then, clean up layer one until there's no leaving residue that will give you trouble spots in the bottom layer of resin

Step 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 above

Step 5. Look around the entire mold and if there are any holes, fill in any holes in the outside layer.

Step 6. Now, your silicone is done, and let it cure. Set the silicone in a clean dry room and leave it for a while.

These silicone molds are not food-safe. You can use these silicone molds to do life-casting or food-casting. Here is what you need and how to make silicone molds at home.

Materials:

  • water
  • blue dish-soap (any brand seems to work) - do not use clear soap
  • 100% Silicone (do not buy quick set silicone, you need 100% silicone I, not silicone II)
  • bowl or pail
  • caulking gun
  • something you want to make a mold of
  • scissors/knife
  • masking tape - to patch holes in your positive, if necessary.

Instructions:

Step 1. Start by making your catalyzing solution. Mix a high concentration of dish soal in a bowl.

Step 2. Then, go to catalyzing the silicone process. Cut off the tip of the silicone caulk tube. Then, set it in the caulking gun. 

Step 3. Place silicone surround the desired object into the bath.

Step 4. Now, gently clump the string of the silicone together. Then, fold it into a ball and massage it gently.

Step 5. Sink your object to the silicone when it begins to less malleable.

Step 6. Add a thick layer of silicone to the surface area of our object. This aims to make sure that your mold is watertight.

Step 7. Last, let the silicone molds cure before you use them. Allow your object to remain in the mold when it cures. It will take about an hour to cure your mold.

Step 1. Make a base for the mold. This can be plastic, wood, or foil.

Step 2. Then, place the model to the base and you are ready to start doing the project.

Step 3. You can seal the model if necessary. If you use porous models like wood, you can seal it.

Step 4. Now, prepare a container to mold rubber. You can use plastic containers for this. Better to seal the seams to avoid rubber from escaping.

Step 5. Then, remove silicone rubber based on the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 6. After rubber cures for at least 6 hours, remove the plastic mold box.

Step 7. Prepare the wax by melting it in a double boiler. Don't forget to wear a glove to protect from high heat.

Step 8. Now, place the wax to the mold.

Step 9. Pour the wax into the mold and let it cool around the wax. Last, trim the wick.
