A grown yellow dragon fruit tree has fleshy stems that can reach to 20th long heights. In general, the dragon fruit plant is best to grow in dry, tropical, or subtropical climates with annual rainfalls each year. 

The flower of the tree is ornate and beautiful and only blooms at night. The unopened flower buds are even cooked and eaten as vegetables. Yellow dragon fruit plant can produce fruit for 4 to 6 times each year.

How to Plant Dragon Fruit

Before you plant a dragon fruit plant, you have to consider several things in order for the tree to grow well. The things that you have to consider are:

• Soil

In order for the dragon fruit to grow well, you have to plant the tree in soil that is well-draining and slightly acidic, it is best to grow dragon fruit plant in the soil which pH level is between six and seven. The best kind of soil for dragon fruit is the sandy soil.

• Water

Dragon fruit plant is a cactus plant, so it is important to watch how much water you give to the plant. Make sure that you only water the top of the plant if it’s dry and doesn’t give too much water to the plant since the soil needs to be moist, instead of soaked.

• Fertilizer

You can also give some fertilizer to the dragon fruit plant during the active growing season so that the plant can grow properly and you can ripe the best quality of dragon fruit from the tree.

• Light

Dragon fruit plant needs a lot of sunlight to grow properly. It is okay if the base of the plant doesn’t get much sunlight, but you have to make sure that the top of the plant receives a lot of sunlight every day. If the plant doesn’t get much sunlight, the fruit will not be good.

• Temperature

Since the dragon fruit plant is native to the tropical and sunny regions, it will not do well if you grow dragon fruit plant in cold temperature.

Make sure that the temperature, where the plant grows, is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The best temperature that is required in order for the plant to grow well is 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

• Support

Since the dragon fruit plant is a climbing plant, you also need some support for the trees to grow well, such as poles made of bamboos, woods, or metal that is strong enough to support the growth of the tree.

Make sure to give some space in between the trees, about 3 feet, so that the tree can grow well.

How to Plant Dragon Fruit Cuttings

It is possible to grow dragon fruit plant from the cutting of the tree. But you have to make sure not to cut too much from the parent tree because it can affect the growth and even kill the parent tree. You can take about one foot segment of the tree, with this length you can grow about three to four new trees. 

Then, cut the segment into three to six inch section. After that, give the end of the tree some fungicide and wait for it to dry. The cutting is ready to be planted after about five days, or when the tips of the cutting become white. The best time to plant dragon fruit cutting is in the summer.
