If you’re a Gmail user and are looking for ways on how to block emails, you can do the following steps to remove the unwanted emails from your inbox.

  • On your computer, go to Gmail.
  • Open the message.
  • In the top right, click More.
  • Click Block [sender].

This way, messages from blocked senders will go to your Spam folder. If you blocked someone by mistake, you can unblock them using the same steps, so there’s no need to worry!

How to unsubscribe from emails

Blocking isn’t the only way to remove the emails you don’t want to receive—you can instead unsubscribe from them. This works great for those annoying promotions or newsletters you often get from signing up on a site. Simply follow the steps below to know-how.

  • On your computer, go to Gmail.
  • Open an email from the sender you want to unsubscribe from.
  • Next to the sender's name, click Unsubscribe or Change preferences. If you don't see these options, follow the steps above to block the sender or mark the message as spam.

Note that it may take a few days for the emails to stop after you unsubscribe.

How to remove spam and suspicious emails

Another option to stop getting unwanted, suspicious emails coming to your inbox is by removing them to the Spam folder. So, if you see a spam message in your inbox, you can do the following:

  • On your computer, go to Gmail.
  • Check the box to the left of the message or open the message.
  • Near the top of the page, click Report Spam.


How to report phishing

We often receive suspicious emails that asks for personal information, and while you can mark them as spam, it’s important to also report the email for phishing. Follow through the steps below:

  • On your computer, go to Gmail.
  • Open the email you want.
  • At the top right, click More.
  • Click Report phishing.

How to block emails

Learning how to block emails on Outlook will stop any unwanted emails coming to your Inbox. To do so, simply follow these simple steps:

  • Select the messages or senders you want to block.
  • From the top toolbar, select Junk > Block (or Spam > Block).
  • Select OK. The messages you select will be deleted and all future messages will be blocked from your mailbox.

If you want to change your mind, you can unblock someone by opening your Blocked senders list and selecting the Remove icon next to their name.

How to mark emails as junk/spam

Aside from blocking someone in Outlook, try marking the unwanted emails coming to your inbox as junk or spam by following the steps below:

  • Select the messages you want to mark as junk.
  • At the top of the screen, select Junk > Junk (or Spam > Spam) to move the message to your Junk or Spam folder.

Messages in your Junk folder are automatically deleted between 10 and 30 days after they arrive, so you don’t have to go the extra mile manually deleting them.

Block unknown senders

If you don’t like receiving emails from unknown senders, you can block everyone except those in your Safe senders list. 

  • Open your Safe senders and domains and select Add.
  • Type the email addresses or domains of your contacts and other people you want to add, and press Enter.
  • Under Filters, select from:

           Only trust email from addresses in my Safe senders and domains list and Safe mailing lists

           Block attachments, pictures, and links from anyone not in my Safe senders and domains list

  • Select Save.

If you’ve been using Yahoo Mail and want to know how to block emails, you just need to follow the instructions below:

  • Open an email or select it from your mailbox.
  • Click the More icon.
  • Click Block Senders.
  • Optionally, select to also delete emails you've received from the sender.
  • Click Ok.

Yahoo Mail lets you anonymously add up to 1000 email address to your blocked list. You can remove them if you change your mind by doing the following steps:

  • Click the Settings icon. | click More Settings.
  • Click Security and Privacy.
  • Mouse over an email address and click the Delete icon.
