Step 1. Clean the pan by simply wiping it down using a dry paper towel or cotton dishcloth. If there is food stuck on, scrape them off with a plastic spatula.

Step 2. The next step of how to clean the cast iron pan is using a scrubber and some water.  Scrub the sticky area. To get rid of sticky food, scrub the pan using a paste of coarse salt and water. After that, rinse or wipe with a paper towel.

Step 3. After that, place the pan in the sink and add about 1/2 inch or so of warm water. Then, sprinkle in half of the coarse Kosher salt.

Step 4. Then, scrub the pan immediately with a stainless-steel scrubber or sponge.

Step 5. Then, rinse the pan clean with water. 

Step 6. Now, put the pan in the oven at 35 degrees F for at least ten minutes. Allow the pan to completely dry.

Step 7. Remove the pan from the oven using a potholder. 

Step 8. Oil the pan. Using a cloth or paper towel, rub a little vegetable oil or melted butter onto the inside of the pan. Some people also like to grease the outside of the pan. Scrub to get rid of the excess.

  • Dishtowel or paper towels
  • Scrubbing brush, scouring pad, or sponge
  • Aluminum foil
  • Dish soap
  • Steel wool
  • Vegetable oil (or cooking oil of choice)
  • Oven


Step 1. Clean all the rust in your pan using fine steel wool. Eliminate rust from the affected area and scrub the pan until the affected area returns to raw cast iron.

Step 2. After that, wash the pan thoroughly using warm water and mild dish soap. Gently scrub with a bristle brush, soft scrubbing pad, or gauze sponge to remove all the dirt.

Step 3. Now, dry the pan. Dry the cast iron pan immediately using a clean soft towel or paper towel.

Step 4. To make your iron pan looks sparkling, cover the pan with a layer of oil. Apply a small amount of vegetable oil or another cooking oil evenly all over the piece.

Step 5. Don't forget to oil the bottom and the handle. Make sure to only use a small amount of oil to avoid a sticky surface.

Step 6. After oiling the iron pan, place the cast iron pan upside down on the top rack of your oven. Then, place a sheet of aluminum foil or a foil-lined baking sheet on the bottom rack.

Step 7. Heat cast iron for one hour at 350 °F. After an hour, turn off the heat.  Allow the pan to cool before using.
