By default, Word starts page numbers on the first page of the document. However, in some cases, this doesn't make sense. If the first page is a cover page or title page, then the second page of the document must be page 1, and the first page should not be labeled at all.
Here’s how to number pages in Word on page 2.

Step 1

The first step of how to number pages in Word is to enter the page number by clicking the Insert tab and selecting the page number in the header & footer section. Then select the numbering position.

Step 2

Enter the page numbers by clicking the Insert tab and selecting the page number in the header & footer section. Then select the numbering position.

Step 3

Since the new page number will be selected, the Design tab for the Header & Footer Tool will appear. Under Options, select Different First Page. (This will begin page numbering from page 2, but the second page will be labeled "2". This is not what we want. There are additional steps to make this page "1").

Step 4

While the Design tab for “Header & Footer” is still open, choose “Page Numbers” under “Header & Footer” and then select “Format Page Numbers”.

Step 5

The resulting window is shown on the right. Change the radial button at the bottom to Start and type 0. Then click ok.
