As the Spanish equivalent to donuts, traditional Spanish churros come in a variety of shapes and sizes, the most common being a loop or a stick.

Instead of buying some at café, learn to make this simple Spain churro recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Oil for frying
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • Sugar or honey for toppings

Instructions:

  1. Pour frying oil into a large heavy-bottomed frying pan. Make sure there is about 2 inches of oil in the pan to cover the churros. Set pan over medium high heat and begin to pre-heat the oil to 350 F to 375 F.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine water, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, salt, and sugar. Stir, cover, and bring mixture to a boil.
  3. Combine flour and baking powder in a medium-sized mixing bowl and stir to combine.
  4. Once the water mixture reaches a boil, slowly pour boiling water from the saucepan into the flour mixture, stirring constantly with a fork until it is a smooth dough without lumps.
  5. Immediately spoon dough into a churrera (a large cookie press) or a pastry bag.
  6. Carefully squeeze the dough into hot pre-heated oil (350 F to 375 F) and fry until golden brown.
  7. Remove and place on a paper towel to drain and then cut churros into some desirable lengths.
  8. Lastly, sprinkle with sugar or drizzle with honey to taste, and serve. 

2. Baked Churro Recipe

Do you know that you can bake your churros rather than frying them? To learn how to make baked churro recipe, prepare the ingredients and proceed to the instructions given below:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • ⅓ cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • Salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • cinnamon sugar, to coat
  • chocolate, melted, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180˚C).
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar in the water and bring to a boil.
  3. Turn off the heat and stir in the flour.
  4. Take the pot off of the heat source, mix in the vanilla and the eggs one at a time.
  5. Transfer mixture to a piping bag with a 5 point, or star, tip.
  6. Pipe out thick 3-inch (8 cm) strips of churro batter onto a baking sheet covered with parchment, using a knife to release each piece from the piping tip, if needed.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes, then broil until golden brown.
  8. Dredge each churro in melted butter, then cinnamon sugar.
  9. Serve with melted chocolate if desired.

3. Churro Waffle Recipe

You can experiment with your churros! Instead of the regular shapes, you can make churro waffle! Here’s the churro recipe made into a waffle!

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm milk
  • 1/3 cup butter ; melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 shakes ground cinnamon ; plus more if desired
  • For the toppings, prepare 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar. Set aside when you’re done. At the same time, you can combine your churro topping and set it aside.
  2. Preheat waffle iron.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Stir in the milk, butter, and vanilla. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and fold in three shakes of cinnamon. Beat until blended.
  4. Melt the 1/2 cup of butter that will be poured over the waffles. Spray waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray. Ladle the batter into a preheated waffle iron.
  5. Cook the waffles until golden and crisp. Once fully cooked, immediately pour melted butter on each side of the waffle and then dip each buttered side into your cinnamon/sugar churro mixture.
  6. Serve immediately. 

4. Churro Cheesecake Recipe

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 8oz packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 8oz cans Pillsbury crescent dinner rolls

Instructions:

  1. Combine 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tablespoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Set aside.
  2. Beat the cream cheese till smooth. Add the sugar, egg, and vanilla and beat till smooth and creamy. Set aside.
  3. Spray a 9x13" pan with non-stick spray, then sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly in the bottom of the pan.
  4. Unroll the dough onto a lightly floured piece of waxed paper and press all the seams together. Carefully lift into the pan on top of the cinnamon sugar and press to the edges of the pan.
  5. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the dough. Unroll the second can of dough and roll it out the same way as the first one. Place it on top of the filling.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar on top of the dough. Bake at 350° for about 30 minutes or until light brown.
