Rose Garden Portland: Explore the Magical Place Filled with Thousands of Colorful Roses

Rose Garden Portland, or also known as Portland International Rose Test Garden, is the oldest rose test garden in the United States that is continuously running until this day. It is located in Washington Park, Portland, Oregon, and was first opened in 1917. There are over 10.000 roses of more than 650 varieties that occupied the 4.5 acres of garden.

There are eleven American Garden Rose Selections test gardens in the United States, and one of them is the Rose Garden Portland. The Rose Garden Portland itself consists of four gardens with different roses, namely the Gold Medal Garden, Royal Rosarian Garden, Shakespeare Garden, and Miniature Rose Garden. The rose bushes at Rose Garden Portland is maintained by staff and volunteers.

In addition, the garden also has other features that visitors can visit, such as an inventory where visitors can see the names and locations for the roses at the garden. There’s also a brick walkway called The Queens Walk and an amphitheater that often used as a venue for a lot of events, such as concerts and plays. When the weather is nice, you might get the opportunity to have a picnic at the amphitheater.

If you’re interested in things related to roses, you can stop by the Rose Garden Store to buy books about roses, merchandise, and garden supplies.  While you’re exploring the park, you might also notice several art installations located at the park, like a fountain named Frank E. Beach Memorial Fountain and a bronze statue named Royal Rosarian.

April and October are usually the blooming seasons for roses in Portland. But if you want to see the rose bushes at Rose Garden Portland in its best condition, you should visit in June when it's the peak of the blooming season. 

Portland Rose Garden Hours

Portland Rose Garden is open from 07:30 a.m. to 09:00 p.m. daily. If you want to learn more about the park and the roses, you can follow a public tour that the park provided at 01:00 p.m., but you need to keep in mind that the free public tours are only available from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. If you want to follow the public tours you need to come to the Rose Garden Store 10 minutes before the tour starts.

Portland Rose Garden Address

Portland Rose Garden is located in Washington Park. The main entrance to the garden is located at 400 SW Kingston Avenue, Portland, OR 97210. Since parking spaces in Washington Park is limited, you can opt for public transportation to get to Washington Park instead. You can get there by TriMet bus number 63, free Explore Washington Park shuttle, or by MAX Light Rail.

Portland Rose Garden Parking

Parking service for Washington Park is open from 9:30 a.m. to 08:00 p.m. daily and on holidays. The fee that you need to pay for parking is $2 per hour and $8 if you park all day. You can pay the parking fee at pay stations or through the ParkingKitty app. You can pay the parking fee at the pay station with coins or cards such as American Express, VISA, and MasterCard.

Meanwhile, if you want to use the ParkingKitty App, you should download the app and input the Enter Zone 400 for Washington Park. Please note that you can also park at Sunset Transit Center if the parking spaces in Washington Park are full.
