Shades State Park is a peaceful destination you will love. Situated approximately 17 miles southwest of Crawfordsville (off S.R. 47), this park is a favorite palace for canoeists and hikers. Stunning sandstone cliffs overlook Sugar Creek and many shaded ravines offer a beautiful backdrop for your vacation through this lovely nature paradise. Meanwhile, the nearby Pine Hills Nature Reserve provides fantastic topography for people who are looking to take a long hike.

For those of you who are looking for a great camping destination to share spooky stories around a campfire, Shades State Park is the best place to go. Open from April to October, Shades State Park campground provides 105 drive-in campsites, 10 boat-in sites, and 7 hiking locations.

The main sites are completed with picnic tables, tent spaces, and fire rings. Besides, they are able to accommodate trailers and RVs up to 55 feet.

Hookups are not available in Shades State Park. However, there is a dump station available. Also, there is a restricted number of sites that ADA can be accessed. The campground’s facilities include flush toilets, drinking water, picnic areas, hot showers, and playgrounds, as well as sports fields.

In addition, there is an amphitheater that hosts a seasonal nature program. Meanwhile, ice and firewood are only available for purchase on-site. Campsite fees start from $10 until $24 per night. Meanwhile, hikes and boat rides are based on first-come, first-served.

The Farmhouse and Log Cabin cottages are surrounded by old forest in all directions. Therefore, it makes an extraordinary view and exploration of the unspoiled wilderness. You can take a stroll straight to the Shades State Park and Pine Hills Nature Preserve off the driveway for unspoiled beauty and hikes or a short drive to Turkey Run State Park or Raccoon Lake. Sugar Creek River holds a variety of water activities throughout the summer and the surrounding park holds events throughout the year.

The Rustic Log Cabin can sleep 8-10 people in three bedrooms alongside a modern kitchen and two upgraded bathrooms. Also, there is a convenient fireplace, wraparound porch, yoga loft, and a big 24x24 patio for stargazing and relaxing in one of the darkest spots in the Midwest.

The farmhouse can sleep 8 people in 2 bedrooms. It is completed with a modern kitchen and two fully equipped bathrooms. Besides, there is a nice wood-fired stove and a 16x12 terrace with lots of space to stretch out.

Shades State Park Hiking

Many of the trails in Shades State Park, like others in the area, use ravines. Therefore, there are some intriguing hikes amidst ferns, moss, rocky cliffs, and towering trees. However, it can also be a little rough at times.

These trails also include rocky stairs and ladders in some cases. Also, there are significant climbs and descents for those who are still unfamiliar with climbing. During periods of high water, such paths cannot be used at all.
