Hattiesburg Zoo’s gates were opened on Easter Sunday 1950. Legend has it that the park that housed the zoo, Kamper Park, was a famous destination place to bring all kinds of animals in the early 1900s.

Situated in Kamper Park in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the Hattiesburg Zoo is a 12-acre zoo that offers a home to nearly 80 animal species from around the world. This family fun destination not only provides wildlife encounters but also has carousels, a picnic area, Parris Jewelers Mining Sluice, train, splash pad, gift shop, African drum station, and a concession area.

There is also the Asbury Discovery Center, Touch Africa Petting Zoo, and edZOOcation Center. The zoo is situated in a stunning section of Kamper Park, with dense pine and oak forests, grassy picnic areas, walking trails, tennis courts as well as interesting playgrounds.

The zoo has seen countless characters of its time, including the well-known elephant, Miss Hattie. Miss Hattie's personality enchanted everyone who visits.

Many visitors remember that she was going to rock the carousel music. Miss Hattie died in 1974 when her best friend, a goat with one horn, was swept away in a flood. Heartbroken, Hattie lay down, never getting up again. Today, you can discover a memorial statue of Miss Hattie and her little goat right inside the Zoo gates.

Like Hattie in her time, today's favorite Zoo animals are Chewy the Sloth and her family, Mo and Baby Maple. Chewy's wonderful and enchanting personality and joyful joy keep visitors from all over the world happy.

From Two Toed Sloths Hoffman to Howler Monkeys and Jaguars, Hattiesburg Zoo is home to many animals, all with their own special talents and personalities. Everyone can find their favorite animal friend at the Hattiesburg Zoo.
