Piazza del Duomo was originally created in the 14th century and has gradually evolved since then along with Duomo, which took about six centuries to complete. The overall plan, in its current form, was largely due to architect Giuseppe Mengoni, and dates to the second half of the 19th century. Duomo di San Gimignano dates from the 12th century and is one of the best examples of Roman architecture in Tuscany. Developed over the years the interior walls are entirely decorated with wall paintings dating from the 14th century.
