Since its opening in 1936, Westmoreland State Park has been known as one of the six originals and best state parks in Virginia.

It has about one and a half miles of water frontage along the gorgeous Potomac River.

The park has riverfront beaches, hiking trails, and boat rentals with over 1,300 acres of beautiful nature surroundings.

Activities you can do here include hiking, camping, fishing, boating, biking and swimming, and shark-teeth hunting.

Make sure to visit nearby historic places like George Washington Birthplace National Monument, Stratford Hall, and Westmoreland Museum.

SIGHTSEEING

Located just 12-minute drive from the park, George Washington Birthplace National Monument is a great place for you to visit before heading to Westmoreland State Park. This house is surrounded by beautiful greenery grounds with workshop and graveyard. It showcases artifacts and related information about America’s first president George Washington. Westmoreland Museum is a good place to spend your time before arriving to Westmoreland State Park. Located just 10-minute drive from the park, this museum was established in 1941 and became the first museum to open regularly in the Northern Neck. This museum is displaying the portrait of William Pitt (Lord Chatham) by Charles Willson Peale in 1768. It’s also home to the Westmoreland Mercantile General Store and the Montross Soda Shoppe. Other activities you can do here are hiking, camping, fishing, boating, biking and swimming. You can also heat to Horsehead Cliffs for a spectacular view experience.

CAMPING

With its 1,311 acres of land, this park is blessed with beautiful nature surroundings and camping facilities. The Park offers 3 buddy sites & a large group tent area that can be reserved, as well as rustic camping cabins with upscale five-bedroom Potomac River facility. When you plan a trip here, be sure to check their events calendar for special hikes and guided tour. The park provides many events such as holiday celebrations, wildlife tracking, cooking demonstrations, geocaching, fossil hikes, kayak tours, and much more. Westmoreland offers camping from March 1 to the first Monday in December annually. Reservation is a must.

HEALTH ADVISORY

One of the most important things you can do as a camper and as a traveler in general to protect the trees and forest diversity is to stop moving firewood. New cases of tree-killing insects and diseases are often first found in campgrounds and parks. You are not allowed to bring firewood from home. You can buy it at the park or in the park’s locality. Any wood brought to the park should be fully burned before leaving.
