(4) Don’t forget to take a stroll to snap great pictures, especially around Malé. (5) Visiting religious sites means you should dress properly. This is the sign of respect. Your footwear should be left outside at the entrance. (6) Learn a few basic phrases like as-salamu alayku (peach be upon you, hello), haalu kihineh? (how are you?), rangalhu (good), and aharem dhanee (I am going).

Don’ts: (1) Topless bathing is not recommended. Public nudity is strictly prohibited. (2) Selling or purchasing shells and black corals is not allowed. They are protected species in the country. (3) Don’t bring alcohol or liquor in the Maldives. (4) Don’t get involved in trafficking narcotic drugs. You can get harsh penalties like life imprisonment. (5) Respect the Ramadan month by not consuming food, drink, and smoke in public. (6) Avoid littering the streets. (7) Don’t throw plastic bags into the sea, it can be dangerous. (8) Kissing or hugging in public is not recommended.

LANDMARKS

Apart from beach life, the Maldives also have historical landmarks. Tsunami Monument is one of the most popular landmarks in the country. This place is a steel memorial adorned with spheres representing those who left us in Boxing Day tsunami in 2004.
