Butano State Park is one of the quietest and most remote parks in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Even though it's becoming more popular, it's still a great alternative to the increasingly crowded Big Basin.
The park has a very fertile small to medium sized redwood tree tucked in a protected coastal gorge.
Some canyons have been cut down, especially along Little Butano Creek and Olmo Fire Trail, both of which have been cut down.
There is no really big redwood in the park, but it seems to be a natural condition of the area and not a result of logging.
Butano State Park was created in 1957 to protect redwood on the California coast from logging. Today's visitors will find quiet canyons filled with towering redwoods of the second and third growths, chattering creeks, and more. The park has 40 miles of hiking trails winding through more than 4,000 hectares of canyons and plateaus. Scattered throughout are a patch of oak forest, wet riparians, and sunny chaparral ecosystems. Among the diverse wildlife and plants in the park, pedestrians can see woodpeckers, water lizards, and calypso orchids bloom in spring.
If you have an hour, you can enjoy the redwoods, ferns, and light brown along the Little Butano Creek Trail. It stretches 1.5 miles to the heart of redwood park by talking around. And if you have half a day, you can stretch your legs and witnessing the view of the redwood trees, the wetlands, and ridge top of the 5-mile Jackson Flats Loop. But, if you have a full day, just leave the civilization behind and explore the forgotten forest and beautiful views of the 9.5-mile Canyon Loop. You'll feel better and alive again.
The campground in this park is hidden among the redwood trees. The park has a great campground that this park provides 21 drive-in campsites, 18 walking campsites, and an inland trail camp with 8 campsites. You won't be worried about taking a leak because a toilet with running water is provided at the main campsite. And drinking water is available in the park at both the main campsite and the daily use area. Yet, there is no shower and it won't make the atmosphere of natural life gone.
Keep in mind that you need extra equipment if you go camping during the winter and rainy season. The road will be slippery because of the wet grounds. Make sure to bring thick clothes and equipment.
