Arroyo Burro Beach County Park is the official name of what the locals call Santa Barbara Hendry's Beach.
The beach is surrounded by high cliffs with parks and walkways on it including the Douglas Family Reserve.
It is a wooded space that was saved from development by locals and even Michael Douglas who named it in honor of his father, Kirk.
The path to the nature reserve starts at the entrance to the parking lot.
Above the head at Hendry there are kites and paragliding which take off from the nearby Elings Park.
Regardless of whether you are heading east or west you have a choice of two large walks in Arroyo Burro Beach. Heading east with moderate or low tides will allow you to get to Shoreline Park. A popular iteration can be done by going up the stairs (all 241) on Mesa Lane and back through Douglas Preserve. If you take a walk in the afternoon, walking along the edge of a cliff through a nature reserve near the sunset is truly spectacular. Heading west takes you along a vast stretch of beach, with lots of tide-pooling at low tide. There are a series of small points, but most of which you will meet during the next three miles to More Mesa are wide beaches, lots of sand and nice walks.
At Arroyo Burro Beach there are unique seaside restaurants by the ocean making this beach a great place to visit. The coastline in both directions provides access to a relatively long stretch of coast. At low tide, walking either to the marina or Goleta Beach is a pleasant way to spend a few hours on a weekend afternoon. This is considered by many to be Santa Barbara's best local beach resort. It is also fun to go swimming on the beach and kids are allowed too. But, you have to keep an eye on your kids while playing on the beach.
The pandemic outbreaks has made everyone to keep the distance and social distancing. You need to equip yourself with enough health equipment such as wearing mask, bringing hand sanitizer, and any other healthcare to protect yourself. Stay safe and clean!
