Makua Beach (or Tunnels Beach) is one of the most secluded beaches situated on Oahu’s leeward (west) coast.

This golden sand beach is the best destination for snorkeling and surfing. It is backed by the Waianae Mountain Range and Makua Valley.

Makua Beach always has a somewhat rip current flowing west, even though the weather is nice. Keep yourself aware all the time to ensure that you don’t drift too far out. Remember that the wintertime, big waves crossing the reef can be highly dangerous. The water between the two main reef sections probably look peaceful, however, it’s sometimes far too dangerous to swim in.

From November to April, there is some excellent surf that is perfect for experienced surfers. Since this beach is not protected by an offshore reef, therefore, the waves can get very high and the currents strong on rough days. On the calmer days, bodyboarding and fishing are well-known activities here.

Through snorkeling, you can see amazing coral and marine life at this beach. If you are a beginner at snorkeling, you need to stay close to the shore. Just follow the inner reef, even though it is probably not as fun as the outer reef, but it has lots of channels, caverns, and tunnels. Meanwhile, if you are experienced snorkelers, you can swim to the outer reef, however, it depends on the water conditions. So far, the outer reef is the most interesting spot.
