North Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area in United States

A lone 4-wheeler on the dunes

IMPOSING AND PICTURESQUE In a corner of the Colorado Desert filled with beautiful, quirky landscapes, the Algodones Dunes really stands out.

That's a lot of sand! We were driving from Phoenix to San Diego and specifically altered our route to pass through the dunes.

California's Largest! These are the largest dunes open to recreational use in California. Northwest of Yuma, and east of Calipatria, with dimensions of 45 miles (NW to SE) by 6 miles (SW to NE).

SHARE
The dunes are the site of a very unusual parasitic plant called "sand food."
